Newtownards Chamber of Trade has welcomed the pedestrianisation of Conway Square following the installation of protective bollards by the Department for Infrastructure (DfI), marking the culmination of more than a decade of lobbying to improve safety and enhance the town centre.
For many years, Conway Square had become an unofficial car park, with vehicles regularly driving and parking in an area originally intended as a pedestrian space. The situation created safety concerns for shoppers and visitors while also causing difficulties for businesses operating around the Square.
Chamber President Derek Wright welcomed the move, describing it as a significant milestone for the town.
"This is something the Chamber has been campaigning for over the past 12 years. Conway Square was always designed to be a pedestrian space, but unfortunately it had become known as the largest free car park in Newtownards. The level of antisocial parking was creating safety issues and detracting from what should be one of the town's most attractive public spaces."

Derek added:"While there will be some adjustments to how deliveries are managed, we have worked closely with the Department to ensure alternative loading and unloading arrangements are available on High Street.
We appreciate that businesses will need time to adapt, but the long-term benefits far outweigh the short-term changes."Since the bollards were installed, the transformation has already been noticeable.
"The Square immediately feels more open, safer and much more welcoming. It has created a cleaner, more attractive environment where people can spend time, meet friends and enjoy the town centre. We believe this will encourage more footfall and support local businesses.
"The positive impact is already being recognised by retailers in the town.
Ryan Mayne, Store Manager at Peacocks Newtownards, said customer feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.
A lot of customers have told us they feel much safer, especially those with young children who can now enjoy the Square without worrying about traffic. People have also commented on how much nicer it is to take photos with the Paddington statue without cars in the background. Personally, I think it has made the town look much better and has really improved the flow of pedestrians around the Square."
