Chamber Calls for Urgent Investment in Newtownards Water Infrastructure to Unlock Business Growth

Newtownards Chamber of Trade has renewed its call for urgent investment in Newtownards' water and wastewater infrastructure, warning that capacity constraints are preventing businesses from growing, discouraging investment and limiting the town's economic potential.

Chamber President Derek Wright and Vice President Michael Cafolla recently joined Strangford MLA Kellie Armstrong and local business representatives at a meeting with Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins to discuss the ongoing challenges facing the town.

Representing the interests of the local business community, Derek and Michael highlighted the significant impact that inadequate water and wastewater capacity is having on businesses across Newtownards.

From restricting commercial development to delaying investment decisions, the issue is creating unnecessary barriers for businesses looking to expand and for new enterprises considering the town as a place to invest.

Derek Wright, President of Newtownards Chamber of Trade, said:"Businesses in Newtownards are ambitious and ready to grow, but the current infrastructure simply isn't keeping pace with demand. We regularly hear from businesses that opportunities are being delayed or lost because of capacity issues. If we want to attract investment, create jobs and support our local economy, this challenge must be addressed as a priority."

Vice President Michael Cafolla added:"This isn't just about future development - it's affecting businesses today. Companies need confidence that the infrastructure is in place to support expansion, new premises and continued investment. Without that confidence, Newtownards risks missing out on valuable economic opportunities."

The meeting, organised by Kellie Armstrong MLA, provided an opportunity for local businesses to speak directly with the Minister about the practical implications of the infrastructure constraints.

Business representatives shared first-hand experiences of how the lack of network capacity is affecting growth plans and limiting development across the town.

Newtownards Chamber welcomed the opportunity for constructive dialogue and was encouraged by the Minister's engagement with the concerns raised. However, the Chamber believes sustained investment and long-term planning are essential if Newtownards is to realise its full economic potential.

The Chamber will continue working collaboratively with elected representatives, government departments and key stakeholders to ensure the needs of the local business community remain firmly on the agenda.

As Newtownards continues to grow, investing in critical infrastructure will be essential to unlocking new commercial opportunities, supporting housing development, attracting inward investment and ensuring the town remains a vibrant place to live, work and do business.
